La Parguera A local guide by Marietta Keys
The cays of La Parguera seen from above

Cayo Collado

Very shallow turquoise water and sandbars among the mangroves.

Cayo Collado stands out for how shallow and clear the water around it is. The surrounding sandbars let you stand quite far from shore, which makes it comfortable for groups with kids or anyone who isn't a confident swimmer.

Directions

Only by water, from town. As with other less-visited cays, it's best to arrange it with your operator before you head out.

Things to do

  • Stand in shallow water on the sandbars.
  • Easy snorkeling around the mangroves.
  • Kayak through the sheltered areas between cays.
  • Photography: the contrast between white sand and turquoise water is striking.

Tips

  • Because it's so shallow, the sun reflects hard off the sand: wear sunscreen and a shirt.
  • Don't step on coral or drag your feet over the living seabed.
  • Bring everything you'll need.
  • Arrange your pickup; fewer boats come by than at the main cays.
How to visit

You can only get there by water. Arrange drop-off and pickup with a local operator before you go — there are no services and cell coverage isn't guaranteed on the cays.
