La Parguera A local guide by Marietta Keys

Cayo Laurel

Surrounded by mangroves and marine life, quieter than the main cays.

Cayo Laurel is part of the belt of mangrove cays that shelters La Parguera's coast. It gets fewer visitors than Caracoles or Mata La Gata, which makes it a good choice if you want a day with fewer people around.

Directions

By water from town. Since it's less busy, it's best to arrange it directly with an operator rather than expect it to be a regular tour stop.

Things to do

  • Explore the channels among the mangroves, where the water is very still.
  • Kayaking: the sheltered area is easy to paddle.
  • Bird watching and marine life among the mangrove roots.
  • Peace and quiet — what it does best.

Tips

  • Bug spray: mangrove areas have mosquitoes, especially around sunset.
  • Don't cut or damage the mangrove roots — they're the nursery for much of the area's marine life.
  • Arrange your pickup ahead of time; fewer boats come by.
  • A good option if you already know the main cays.
How to visit

You can only get there by water. Arrange drop-off and pickup with a local operator before you go — there are no services and cell coverage isn't guaranteed on the cays.
